# Coaching goalies

> Goalies are a distinct position in RinkNotes — their own game vocabulary, their own drills, their own reports.

RinkNotes treats a goalie as its own position, not a skater with a different jersey. Once a
player is marked as a goalie, their game capture, their stats, and their training all switch to
the goalie side of the model.

## Mark a player as a goalie

Set the player's **position** to **G** in the **Add player** form — it's a free-text field, so
"G", "goalie", and "goaltender" all read as a goalie. You can do this on any roster, on either
the workspace or the capturer.

  On a **goalie skills camp** or a **goalie tryout**, the position is prefilled to **G** for
  every new player — you don't have to set it each time.

## Goalie game capture

In a game, speak what a goalie does and RinkNotes understands it. It recognizes **saves** and
**goals against**, and the detail around them — the **save type** (glove, blocker, stick, pad),
whether the goalie **controlled the rebound** or gave one up, and whether they were **screened**.

So a note like *"great glove save, no rebound, shorthanded"* lands as a save, on the penalty
kill, glove, rebound controlled — no form-filling.

Those saves and goals-against roll up into the game **scoresheet** as **goaltending lines** —
saves, goals against, and save percentage — alongside the skaters' scoring. See

## Goalie drills and reports

When RinkNotes suggests things to work on, a goalie gets **goalie** work — never a skater
drill dropped in to fill space.

<Warning>
  If RinkNotes doesn't have a goalie drill that fits, it tells you so plainly — you'll see a
  note that **no goalie drills are available yet** and no plan, rather than a skater drill
  standing in. A goalie's training is never padded with the wrong position's work.

The goalie drill library is still growing, so an empty result is something you may see today.
When a drill does fit, it shows up in the goalie's action items the same way a skater's would.

## Everywhere, not just goalie camps

Goalie support isn't tied to one kind of program. It works on:

* a **regular team** — mark any player's position as G,
* a **skills camp** — the **Goalie skills** variant,
* a **tryout** — the **Goalie tryout** variant.

In each, the same goalie vocabulary, scoresheet lines, and goalie-only drills apply.
