# Observation categories

> The nine developmental areas RinkNotes tags player feedback with.

When RinkNotes writes up a **player-feedback** note, it also tags it with one **observation
category** — the developmental area the note is about. This gives every piece of feedback a
consistent, at-a-glance meaning, and lets the dashboard show where your week's attention went.

<Info>
  Categories apply to **player feedback** only. Game stats, action items, and game insights
  aren't tagged this way.
</Info>

## The nine categories

Each category has a color used consistently everywhere it appears — the feed, the dashboard
breakdown, and a player's page.

| Category         | What it's about                                       |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| **Compete** | Battle level, effort, winning pucks, second efforts. |
| **Skating** | Stride, speed, edges, mobility. |
| **Composure** | Poise with the puck, decisions under pressure. |
| **Skill** | Puck handling, passing, shooting, finishing. |
| **Coachable** | Taking feedback, adjusting, work ethic. |
| **Compete Edge** | The extra edge — physicality, net-front, hard areas. |
| **Hockey IQ** | Reads, positioning, support, game sense. |
| **Defensive**    | Defensive-zone play, backchecking, gaps.              |
| **Systems** | Team structure — breakouts, forecheck, special teams. |

You can see the full list any time under **Settings** on the web workspace.

## Changing a category

RinkNotes assigns the category automatically, but you have the final say. While a note is
still in the [Feed](/coaches/review-feed), open it and pick a different category if the note
fits better somewhere else. The change sticks once you confirm the note.

<Tip>
  Don't overthink it — the automatic tag is usually right, and the category is just there to
  help you see patterns. Reassign only when it's clearly off.
