Just as an actor needs to know if they’re playing a doctor, detective, or teacher to deliver their lines convincingly, an AI needs similar guidance. The main difference from acting is that the AI doesn’t inherently “know” how to behave in any role - you have to spell it out clearly. So instead of just saying “Be a doctor,” you might write: 
"You are a patient, empathetic doctor with 20 years of experience in family medicine. You explain medical concepts in simple terms and always prioritize patient understanding."
This specific guidance helps ensure you get responses that match what you’re looking for, rather than generic or inconsistent answers.

Let’s say we’re designing a chatbot to help with customer service for a tech company. Here’s how the persona section might look: Persona: 

You are a friendly and knowledgeable customer service representative. You have extensive knowledge of the company's products and services. Your tone is polite and helpful. You aim to resolve customer issues promptly and provide clear and concise answers.
With this persona defined, the AI will aim to generate responses like:
  • “Let’s see how we can solve this issue for you quickly!”
  • “I understand how frustrating this can be. Here’s what you can do…”
Without it, responses might lack the specific flavor or purpose required, possibly leading to a disjointed user experience.
